[Also in Division F2H] Articles having a threaded surface, e.g. screws, are provided with a patch of thermoplastic material bonded to a predetermined portion of the surface, by heating the articles and passing them past a stream of the powder to cause deposition of the predetermined quantity either prior to or during heating. The articles may be moved with their longitudinal axes extending horizontally and the cross-sectional areas of the powder stream adjusted according to the size of the article and/or the patch. In an apparatus an article supply means 70 comprises supports on which a hopper 72 is mounted. It comprises a recepticle 98 having a discharging opening 100 adjustable with a gate 102. A vibrator 106 facilitates rapid flow of the articles from the hopper. It has a continuous flexible belt which carries the screws to the orienting means 74- which includes a feed trough formed by inclined plates 144 and 146 which form a slot and have a plurality of cleats which serve to change the relative speed of advance of the screws as they gravitate along the trough. Screw feeding guides 172 and 174 form a guide chute extending forwardly and downwardly to the accumulator or storing means 76. Unoriented articles are collected at hopper 184 and returned to hopper 72. Storing means 76 comprises a vertical stacking track 208 to which the screws are delivered by curved feed track 210. Track 208 comprises a bar 212 and bars 214 and 216 adjustably secured to the bar 212. The screws are thereby fed to the main conveyor 78 which comprises a plurality of article receiving and holding fixtures 296 arranged serially on a flexible belt 298 which has a plurality of cleats so that the belt may be driven without slippage by a toothed drum or drums 302. The article holding means 296 comprise a permanent magnet plate 322 having upwardly extending side flanges. The articles are carried to a heating means 80 comprising an elongated high frequency induction heater coil and then to dispensing means 82 comprises a hopper 416 and funnel 422a arranged eccentrically with respect to the axis of a discharge pipe of the hopper.
