Abstract
1470517 Timing ignition; ignition systems LUCAS ELECTRICAL LTD 18 April 1974 [18 April 1973] 18658/73 Heading F1B An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprises a mass flow measuring device for producing an electrical signal representative of the mass flow of air in the induction manifold 10 of the engine and a control device for automatically adjusting the ignition timing of the engine in accordance with the electrical signal. The counter 30 receives pulses from the converter 18 for the duration of the intervals between pulses in the pulse train at the output terminal 25. These pulses emanate from the detector 23. At the start of each interval the gate 27 is opened to admit pulses to the counter 30 and the gate 28 is also opened to admit pulses from the terminal 26 to the converter 31. The count state of the counter 30 at the end of the interval will depend on the product of two parameters namely the frequency of the pulses admitted, which is dependent on the air mass flow-rate through the induction manifold 10 and the length of the interval which is dependent on the speed of the engine. This count state will be directly related to the total mass of air which has passed along the manifold 10 during the interval. During the interval the gate 29 is closed. At the commencement of a pulse at the terminal 25, which occurs when the piston of the engine is at its maximum advance position, the gates 27 and 28 close and the gate 29 is opened. At the same time the monostable circuit 34 is triggered so that the output of the memory 33 corresponding to the existing values of the outputs of the counter 30 and the converter 31 is read into the counter 32. It is arranged that the output pulse of the monostable circuit 34 is completed before a pulse from one of the holes 19b in the plate 19 is produced at the terminal 26. Thereafter 2 degree marker pulses are admitted to the counter 32 to reduce its count state to zero, when the counter is reset and the spark generator is triggered.
