1469952 Incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 16 May 1974 21765/74 Addition to 1455723 Heading C5E An apparatus for the manufacture of gases by incomplete combustion of a hydrocarbon feed comprises an elongated substantially void reactor having at least one device for supplying thereto a gaseous or finely-atomized hydrocarbon material and oxygen or a free oxygen-containing gas and at least one device for the discharge of gaseous reaction product therefrom, the or each supply device being provided with at least one open-ended pipe of outlet diameter d, the outlet(s) of the pipe(s) opening in the longitudinal direction of the reactor, the diameter of the reactor being at least 10d and the length thereof being at least 50 d, the device(s) for the discharge of gaseous reaction product being connected to at least one fuel inlet device of a heating installation, e.g. a furnace, which may be fitted for operation with non-radiating flames and for dual-fuel i.e. gas or liquid fuel, operation. The reactor may be cylinder-shaped.
