Abstract
1399137 Hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixtures BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 8 Oct 1973 [17 July 1972] 33341/72 Heading C5E In a process for the production of a gas containing at least 94 volume per cent hydrogen and carbon monoxide by the partial oxidation of a C 1 -C 7 hydrocarbon fraction with an oxygencontaining gas, the heat supplied to the reaction is provided entirely by heating the reactants and the time between the contacting of the reactants and their entry into a bed of reforming catalyst is from 5 to 30 milliseconds. Mixing of the reactants before they enter the catalyst bed can be ensured by injecting them tangentially into an inlet chamber through a port which has a nozzle for the hydrocarbons projecting into the pipe for the oxygen-containing gas. The oxygen-containing gas, e.g. oxygen or air can be preheated to 700-1100‹ C. and the hydrocarbon feed, e.g. natural gas or coke oven gas, is not preheated to above 400‹C. The catalyst suitably comprises 3-15 wt. per cent nickel on an alumina, silica, alumino-silicate or magnesia support, which can also contain uranium, barium and/or potassium. The product gas has a temperature of 800-1200‹ C. and can be used for the reduction of iron ore in the upper part of a blast furnace or in a fluidized bed. As shown heaters 12 and 12a, which are alternately heated by combustion of fuel and air from lines 14 and 15, are used to heat the incoming air from line 21. The hydrocarbon feed from storage tank 1 and the preheated air are mixed in the swirl chamber 8 of the reformer 9 which contains a fixed or fluidized bed of the catalyst.
