Abstract

1461615 (PNO) n BENCKISER-KNAPSACK GmbH 5 April 1974 [6 April 1973 7 Nov 1973] 15138/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3] Polymeric phosphorus nitride oxide is made by heating a phosphorus compound with urea in a mole ratio of 1 : 3 to 1 : 6 in a first stage at a temperature up to 400‹ C. until evolution of gas ceases and then in a second stage at 600- 800‹ C. in O 2 or an O 2 -containing gas. The phosphorus compound is phosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, phosphorus pentoxide, monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, a phosphoric acid ester, urea phosphate or a polyphosphoric acid or ammonium polyphosphate having DP 10-100. In a modification, the phosphorus compound is heated with guanamine containing 1 to 3 C atoms in the alkyl group, melamine phosphate or dicyandiamide at 400-800‹ C. until cessation of gas evolution without subsequent heating in O 2 or O 2 -containing gas. The products are of low bulk density and are used as flame-retardant additives for thermoplastics (see Division C3).
