1461394 Nestable articles ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 12 March 1974 [12 March 1973] 11788/73 Heading A4A [Also in Division B8] A nestable cup 10 comprises a stacking ring 12 having circumferentially spaced triangular abutment surfaces 20 which diverge upwardly from radial lines of intersection 22 and terminate inwardly of the article in a wall portion 24, and circumferentially spaced pairs of trapezoidal surfaces 26 which intersect along radial lines 25 to define a recess, the recess surfaces providing a camming action to abutment surfaces 20 when an identical cup is nested in the other. As shown, Fig. 2, the radial lines of intersection 25, 22 are circumferentially displaced relative to each other. The angle between the abutment surfaces 20 of a pair is slightly smaller than the angle between the recess surfaces 26, the latter being substantially 90 degrees Fig. 7. Ribs 28 join the radially outward ends of the lines 22 with the radially inward ends of the lines 27, whereas ribs 29 extend between the inward ends of lines 25 and the upper ends of the wall portion 24. In other embodiments Figs. 9, 13 and 15 (not shown) the staying ring 12 is provided respectively adjacent the open end, intermediate the open end and the bottom portion, and in a re-entrant bottom portion of the cup. In the embodiment of Fig. 8a (not shown) the bottom portion of the cup is disposed slightly below the plane containing the lines 22. The invention is also applicable to bottle tops which have the stacking ring adjacent their closed ends. The cups or bottle tops may be made of plastics, metal foil, paper or composite material.
