Abstract
1460219 Production of binder pitch WITCO CHEMICAL CORP 20 Nov 1974 [11 Feb 1974] 50271/74 Heading C5E In a non-continuous process for the production of a binder pitch by the oxidation polymerization of an aromatic petroleum feedstock, oxygen (or a source thereof) is passed through the feedstock at a rate of flow of 0À01-0À20 cu. ft./min. oxygen/b.b.v., at a temperature of 680-750 F. and at atmospheric pressure. The source of oxygen may be air or an organic or inorganic peroxide. The feedstock preferably has an atomatic content of above 75%, an initial boiling point of above 600 F. and an end boiling point or 1100 F. or lower, and is wholly or partly derived from the catalytic fractionation of petroleum hydrocarbons or modified bottoms fractions thereof. Any low boiling fractions present in the feedstock are removed before the oxidation polymerization stage. The feedstock may be mixed with a previously oxidized aromatic petroleum feedstock, in an amount of 5-50% by weight.
