Abstract

1459691 Isocyanate purification IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 March 1975 [8 April 1974] 15455/74 Heading C2C The hydrolysable chlorine content of organic isocyanates is reduced by heating them with sulphuric acid or an ester thereof. The isocyanate may be distilled or part distilled after the above treatment. Specified isocyanates are phenylisocyanate, tolylene diisocyanate, diphenylmethane diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate and methylene bridged polyphenyl polyisocyanates. The sulphuric acid or ester thereof is preferably used in an amount of up to three molar proportions for each atomic proportion of hydrolysable chlorine. The esters of sulphuric acid may be full esters, half esters or ester salts.
