1458276 Carrier for cylindrical containers ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 1 March 1974 [2 March 1973] 9440/74 Heading B8C In a carrier 10 and a plurality of pairs of cylindrical containers 26 each container having an upper chime 26a and the containers being all of the same container radius immediately below the respective chime, the carrier comprises a plurality of pairs of bands 12, 13, Fig. 1 or 18, 19, Fig. 2, first webs 14, or 15, and second webs 16 or 17, there being a respective one of the first webs interconnecting the outer peripheries of the bands of each pair of bands 12, 13 or 18, 19, there being a second web interconnecting the outer peripheries of each of the bands of adjacent pairs of bands 13, 13; 12, 12 or, 19, 19; 18, 18 the bands and webs being formed from a resiliently deformable plastics sheet material with the bands and the webs lying in the plane of the sheet material when unstressed. According to the invention the inner periphery of each of the bands is uninterrupted and shaped to define a closed loop of four arcuate sections 19a, 19b, 19c and 19d the first arcuate section 19a, Fig. 3, being contiguous to the respective first web 14, or 15 and having a radius of curvature substantially greater than the said container radius, the second and third arcuate sections 19b, 19c extending from each end of the first arcuate section and one, or both, of the second and third arcuate sections being contiguous with respect to a respective second web 16, or 17, the second and third arcuate sections having substantially equal radii of curvature which are substantially less than the container radius, and the fourth arcuate section 19d extending between the second and third arcuate sections 19b, 19c and having a radius of curvature no greater than the said container radius, the total arcuate extent of the four arcuate sections being substantially less than the circumferential dimension of the containers immediately below the upper drive. The webs 14, 15, Figs. 1, 2, have convex, and concave, ends respectively, the carrier 10 being formed of a resiliently deformable plastics material such as low density polyethylene, having a sheet thickness of 0À018 inches. In a practical layout of the carrier the section 19a is given a radius of curvature 52% larger than the radius of curvature of a can immediately below the chime, the sections 196, 19c are each given a radius of curvature 50% smaller than said can radius, and the section 19d is given a radius of curvature 16% smaller than said can radius. The total length of the sections 19a-19d is 22 per cent smaller than the circumference of a can immediately below the chime, elongation occurring in the inner periphery at the rate of 10% in the section 19a, 40% in the sections 19b, 19c and 25-30% in the section 19d. The concave ends of the webs 14, Fig. 1, provide finger gripping means.
