Abstract
1285811 Production of jet fuels from gas oils; cracking hydrocarbons UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 9 Jan 1970 [15 Jan 1969] 1123/70 Heading C5E Standard and supersonic jet fuels are produced by:-(a) reacting a feed 1, e.g. vacuum gas oil, with hydrogen in a catalytic bed 6 at not more than 454 C. to remove sulphurous compounds as H 2 S and to convert higher boiling components of the feed to materials boiling between 149 and 288 C.; (b) separating the effluent 7 at 8 at substantially the same pressure and a lower temperature, e.g. 260-427 C. to provide a vapour 9 and a liquid 8; (c) separating the vapour 9 at 10 at substantially the same pressure and 16-60 C. to provide a hydrogenrich vapour 2 and a liquid phase 11; (d) separating the liquid 11 at 12 to provide a standard jet fuel 17 boiling from 149-288 C. and a liquid 13 boiling above 288 C.; (e) reacting the liquid 13, together with at least part of the liquid 18, hydrogen in a catalytic bed 14 at not more than 399 C. and above 68 atmos. to saturate aromatic hydrocarbons and crack heavy gas oil components; (f) separating the effluent 19 at 20 at the same pressure and 16-60 C. to provide a hydrogen-rich vapour 23 and a liquid 21; (g) separating the liquid 21 at 22 to provide a stream 27 of supersonic jet fuel, e.g. boiling from 191-277 C. and a liquid stream 23 boiling above 288 C. which can be recycled to the catalytic bed 14. Suitable catalysts for the reactor 6 contain 4-40 wt. per cent Cr, Mo or W together with 1-6 wt. per cent Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni or Pol on an alumina-silica carrier e.g. 1À8 wt. per cent Ni and 16% Mo on a carrier of 63% alumina and 37 wt. per cent silica. A suitable catalyst for the reactor 14 consists of 0À4 wt. per cent Pt on a carrier of 75 wt. per cent SiO 2 and 25 wt. per cent Al 2 O 3 . The streams 26 and 16 can be passed to a catalytic reforming system.
