Abstract
1456408 Olefin polymerization catalyst BASF AG 19 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 54851/74 Heading C3P Ethylene is homopolymerized or copolymerized with up to 25% of a C 3 to C 10 α-monoolefin or a C 3 to C 10 α-monoolefin is homopolymerized in the presence of (a) organoaluminiumzinc or -magnesium compound and (b) a titanium component obtained by (i) reacting in suspension a metal salt of a CH-acid organic compound of the formula where M is Mg or Mn, R<SP>1</SP> is CN, COR<SP>3</SP> or COOR<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> is COR<SP>3</SP>, COOR<SP>4</SP> or C 6 H 5 , R<SP>3</SP> is alkyl, phenyl or alkylphenyl and R<SP>4</SP> is alkyl, with an organoaluminium compound, and (ii) reacting the solid product of (i) in suspension with a titanium tetrahalide. Specific metal salts are the magnesium salts of acetoacetic acid ethyl ester, acetylacetone, malonic acid diethyl ester, dibenzoylmethane and benzylcyanide. Examples refer to the homopolymerization of ethylene using hydrogen and either pentane diluent or a polyethylene bed and in the presence of (a) Al : Bu 3 or AlEt 3 and (b) the reaction products of Mg acetoacetic acid ethyl ester or Mg acetylacetone with AlEt 3 , AlEt 2 H, AlEt 2 Cl or Al 2 Et 3 Cl 3 and then with TiCl 4 .
