Abstract

1454094 Magnetic separation BRITISH STEEL CORP and LAMBERTON & CO Ltd 8 March 1974 [9 March 1973] 11442/73 Heading B2J [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for unscrambling a group of lengths 21 of ferromagnetic material, e.g. steel blooms or billets, into an ordered arrangement comprises a rotable support 10 carrying at least two magnetic poles 15, 16; discs 12 attached to and rotatable with the support 10 means such as a pusher 22, a sloping ramp, a walking beam bed or chain slings, for urging the lengths 21 laterally towards and against the discs 12; a motor for rotating the support 10 whereby a length 30 magnetically attracted against the surface 12 is lifted and carried from the group of lengths 21 to the other side of the support; means 27, e.g. a rigid abutment, for disengaging the length 30 from the magnet poles; and a roller conveyor 25 for transporting the separated lengths 31. The magnetic poles may be those of a permanent magnet or of an electromagnet. The disengaging means may comprise a resistance or circuit breaker to interrupt or reduce the energisation of the electromagnets or, may include an auxiliary coil energisable to produce an opposing magnetic field if the magnets are of the permanent type. Limit switches such as 32 may be provided to ensure that only one length is lifted simultaneously.
