Abstract
1448662 Coating steel with Sn by hot-dipping; recovering Sn; electro-stripping Sn AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 30 July 1975 [14 Aug 1974 20 June 1975] 31922/75 Headings C7B C7D C7E and C7F A steel, which may contain Ni and Cr, is diffusion coated with Sn by hot-dipping (400 to 700‹C) and the surface layer (Fe Sn 2 ) removed to leave the Fe Sn layer exposed. The Sn bath may contain Ni, Mg, and Cr. On removal from the bath the cooling rate may be 100‹C per hour. The layer is removed by e.g. grinding, pickling or electrochemically. Pickling may be in nitric acid containing hexamethylene tetramine. The electro-chemical removal may be at constant or variable voltage in sulphuric acid. A reference electrode may be used to control the time of the treatment. The tin may be recovered by cathodic reduction on a Pt electrode, after conversion of the stannic sulphate to stannic chloride by hydrochloric acid. Alternatively the tin may be recovered by direct reduction using Zn, Al or Mg as reducing agents.
