Abstract

1447772 Electro-hydrodimerizing olefinic compounds MONSANTO CO 28 July 1975 [15 Aug 1974] 31454/75 Addition to 1447771 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] A process for electro-hydrodimerizing an olefinic compound of the Formula: R 2 C = CRX wherein X is -CN, -CONR 2 or -COOR<SP>1</SP> ; R is hydrogen or R<SP>1</SP> ; and R<SP>1</SP> is (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl to give a hydrodimer of the Formula XCHRÀCR 2 ÀCR 2 ÀCHRX with a molar selectivity of at least 75% based on the converted olefinic compound, comprises electrolyzing an aqueous solution containing at least 0.1 wt per cent of the olefinic compound, at least 0.1 wt per cent of an alkali metal salt selected from phosphate, borate, perchlorate, carbonate and sulphate sufficient to provide alkali metal ions constituting more than half of the total weight of all cations in the solution, and at least 10<SP>-5</SP> gram mol. per litre of mono-quaternary phosphonium or multi-valent, multi-quaternary ammonium. In examples acrylonitrile is converted to adiponitrile.
