Abstract
1447275 Automatic choke valves TEXAS INSTRUMENT Inc 19 Sept 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 43944/73 Heading F1B Control means for adjusting an I.C. engine choke as engine temperature increases after starting, modifies the period of choke operation in accordance with ambient temperature and comprises heat responsive means for adjusting the choke valve, first electrical heater means which when energized heat the heat responsive means, thermostatic switch means which operate to connect the first electrical heater means to an electrical power source when the ambient temperature exceeds a selected value and additional electrical heater means, energizable from an electrical power source when the engine is started, to accelerate heating of the heat responsive means. Control unit 10 includes a housing 12 supporting a metal plate 28 to which is fixed a metal boss 44 having a slot 46 which receives the inner end of a bi-metal spring 48, the outer end 52 of which engages a bell-crank 80 which actuates the choke valve. Two self-regulated electrical heaters 54 and 56 are provided. Each heater consists of a lanthanum-doped barium titanate conductive layer having a metal contact plate fixed to each surface, the resistance of the conductive layer increases sharply when the layer reaches a predetermined temperature. Heater 56 is permanently connected by metal strip 76 and rivet 78 to a metal plate 68 which is connected to an electrical power supply through the vehicle ignition switch. Heater 54 is connected to a rivet 60 positioned beneath a snap-action thermostatic disc 62 which is electrically connected to the plate 68. Both heaters are earthed through the plate 28. Operation. Heater 56 is energized when the ignition switch is closed and begins to heat coil 48 immediately. If the ambient temperature is greater than 60‹F the disc 62 will be in a position so that a stud 66 at its centre contacts rivet 60, thus energizing heater 54 and increasing the heating rate of coil 48 so that the period of time during which the choke is effective is reduced. If the ambient temperature is below 60‹F, the disc 62 is heated by the heater 56 and may also be heated by exhaust-warmed gases. Typically the choke valve reaches the fully open position 20 seconds after starting at 100‹F, after 60 seconds at 60‹F and after 300 seconds at 0‹F. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the heater 56 instead of heating plate 28, heats the disc 62, ensuring that power is supplied quickly to the heater 54.
