Abstract

1,151,387. Vehicle heaters. UNITED-CARR Inc. 7 Feb., 1968 [1 March, 1967], No. 6118/68. Heading F4V. [Also in Division G1] An automobile heater system is provided with a hot air inlet conduit 58, a cold air inlet conduit 60 and an outlet conduit 62, the relative proportions of hot and cold air fed to the outlet being controlled by a pivoted baffle 56 operated by a temperature-responsive actuator 1 of the type comprising a sealed housing filled with wax in which is embedded an electrical heating element so that energization of the heater causes the wax to expand and move a piston-rod 36 to pivot the baffle 56 towards the cold air conduit 60 against the action of a spring 50. A bimetallic contact (not shown) is disposed in the hot air conduit 58 and when the temperature falls below a certain value this contact is operated to pass current to the heater of the actuator 1. This action pivots the baffle so as to allow less cold air to reach the outlet 62. A limit switch 66 is provided to prevent damage to the mechanism by cutting off the supply to the heater in the actuator 1 when the expansion of the wax therein is such as to cause the baffle 56 to completely close off the cold air conduit 60.
