Abstract
1445696 Refractory bricks VEITSCHER MAGNESITWERKE-AG 27 Sept 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 45380/73 Heading C1J Refractory bricks are made by briquetting a mixture of chrome iron ore having a FeO content of 18 to 27 wt. per cent and a grain size of 0À15 to 1À5 mm. and a caustically burnt or dead-burnt magnesia carrier having a grain size of not more than 0.1 mm. and a maximum loss on ignition of 25 wt. per cent, burning the briquetted mixture at at least 2000‹ C. without melting down so that the chrome iron ore is dissolved in the peridase matrix and on cooling is precipitated as a spinel, the residual constituents of the original chromite grains being contained in the sintered material in an amount of at most 10 vol. per cent, forming the sintered material into bricks and firing the bricks at about 1800‹ C. the compositions and proportions of the starting materials being such that the sintered material has a Cr 2 O 3 content of 15 to 25 wt. per cent, Fe 2 O 3 content of 11 to 20 wt. per cent and a lime silica wt. ratio of more than 1À5. The sintered material may be mixed with up to 30 wt. per cent sintered magnesia before being formed into bricks. The chrome iron ore may be in the form of concentrate and contain 44-52 wt. per cent Cr 2 O 3 and 0À3 to 3 wt. per cent SiO 2 . The bricks may be impregnated with tar. In examples MgSO 4 (kieserite) is used for briquetting.
