Abstract

1445561 Mattresses B C WATKIN 24 July 1973 [24 April 1972] 18921/72 Heading A4M A mattress of resilient foam plastics has successive zones 8, 14, 16, 18, 20 along its length formed with cavities 2 of different concentrations and/or sizes so that the zones have different resiliences, the zones intended to take the higher-pressures in use, e.g. zones 14, 18 for supporting the shoulders and hips respectively, being softer than the other zones. The cavities 2 in each zone are uniformly distributed but their concentration is changed gradually between adjacent zones to avoid abrupt changes of resilience. The mattress may be divided intermediate its ends into two parts enclosed in fabric covers, the latter being inter-connected to provide a transverse hinge line whereby the head end may be hinged upwardly to support a user in a sitting position. A double mattress may have its two sides formed with different but proportional resiliencies in its corresponding sections.
