A mattress 3 includes, at least in its central zone, resilient, side by side elements 6 each enclosed in a covering layer 8 and an airpermeable cover envelope 10 which together with rounded corners of the elements 6 defines transverse ducts 11, the elements 6 extending for at least one half the mattress width. The elements 6 may be separately formed elements or, as shown, may be integral with a border and formed by making parallel cuts in a foamed plastics core. Alternatively, the elements may be of rubber or horsehair.
