Abstract

1444954 Shearing; grinding J O KING JNR l9 July 1973 [24 July 1972] 34369/73 Headings B3W and B3D [Also in Division B4] Apparatus for supporting thin walled tubular sleeves during severing to length comprises a stepped plate 10, which has a plane surface 16, an opposed stepped face comprising portions 15 each parallel with the face 16 and at least one passage 18 through each step portion 14 to receive as a close fit a sleeve S to be severed and an internal support member 20 with an adjustable stop 21 for positively locating a selected length of the member 20 relative to the plate. As shown, Fig. 1, in each portion 14 a passage 18p is cylindrical and passages 18s and 18t have flared end portions of different depths to accommodate sleeves with countersunk heads F1 (Fig. 4, not shown). A sleeve is inserted in the selected passage with the length to be trimmed projecting from the face 16 and the member 20 within the sleeve and located by the stop 21 so that it extends through the passage as far as the face 16. The projecting sleeve length may be located in an apertured cutter which is reciprocated to shear it off. The shear may be replaced by a belt sander, a saw or a skiving wheel. Alternatively, the unwanted length may be broken off by a hand tool 40 which has a mandrel 50 for insertion into the sleeve up to the face 16 of the plate 10, and a clamp 55. Two similar plates 101, 110, Fig. 9, may be mounted in a frame 108 with their plane faces abutting, plate 110 being slidable in grooves 109 to vary the thickness of the composite plate.
