1443158 Drawing STD SERVICES Ltd 12 Aug 1975 [5 Dec 1972] 56033/72 Heading B3P [Also in Division C1] Silicon carbide for making tools for cold drawing operations has a density of 3À2 g./cc., compression strength of 500,000 lbs./in.<SP>2</SP>, modulus of rupture of 110,000 lbs./in.<SP>2</SP>, impact strength of 1À4 ft. lbs./in.<SP>2</SP>, porosity of less than 0À1% and purity not less than 99%. The above carbide may be made by mixing SiC with up to 1 % Al containing traces of Fe and hot pressing the mixture at 10,000 lbs./in.<SP>2</SP> at 2200-2450‹ C. The product is in α-phase.
