Abstract

1442501 Cutting apparatus MASCHINENFABRIK F R NIEPMANN & CO 24 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 30472/74 Heading B4B Apparatus for cutting a printed web 1 of paper, plastics or other material into separate sections comprises a web feed roller 3 which co-operates with a counter-pressure roller 4 and is provided with a cutter 8, a peripheral portion 9 of the feed roller being movable inwardly by an additional contact pressure movement of the counter pressure roller, such movement being controlled by means 17 in dependence on the position of the required cut with respect to the cutter. The counter-pressure roller 4 is mounted on a pivoted lever 10 locked , in a normal contact-pressure position of the latter roller, by means of a bolt 12 actuated by a solenoid 13. During normal feeding of the web, a roller 14 mounted on the lever 10 engages a concentric portion of a cam-disc 15 rotating synchronously with the feed roller 3. A photocell 17 is arranged to monitor printed marks on the web such that if the position of the cut varies from the desired location, the solenoid is actuated thereby releasing the bolt 12 and allowing the roller 4 to be additionally urged against the peripheral portion 9 by a spring 11; the portion 9 is in the form of a resilient cushion. The increased pressure of the roller 4 on the portion 9 has the effect of increasing the effective peripheral length of the feed roller 3 thereby momentarily speeding up the movement of the web. Upon release of the bolt, the lever 10 does not move until the roller 14 is aligned with a recess 16 on the cam disc 15; the depth and length of the disc determines the degree of additional pressure and duration thereof. In order to improve the accuracy of cutting, a second feed roller and counter-pressure roller arrangement 3a, 4a, 11a may be provided. In modifications the resilient cushion 9 may be replaced by a metal or plastics pressure member (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), loaded by a spring (19) or an arcuate member (20), Fig. 4 (not shown), loaded by a spring (21).
