The bobbins are brought into register with the winder by a capstan like cylinder 1 which is rotated by a cam operated pawl 20, between winding operations, from a cam shaft 25. The cam shaft 25 also, through an intermittent drive e.g. a star wheel drive 32 to 37, drives a flyer 9, the number of revolutions of the flyer 9 being determined by a variable ratio gearing 39, 40, Fig. 3. Alternatively a constant ratio drive may rotate the winder continuously, Fig. 5, and the winding is activated by engagement of an extendable weft carrier 43 operated through further cams 49, 50, 51. An alternative weft carrier is illustrated in Fig. 10 (not shown). When the cylinder 1 rotates the weft yarn 13 extends from the wound bobbin to the bobbin to be wound. Absence of this yarn is detected by a device 14, Fig. 2, which provides a signal or stops the machine, a further device 7 detects the presence of yarn on an unwound bobbin and acts similarly. The yarn between bobbins is cut by gripping shears 15 and the shuttle is then passed through the shed of the loom and recycled to the cylinder 1. Yarn 8 for the waft is withdrawn from a package 11 through a tensioning brake 12. A plurality of winding devices may be provided for each loom as illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown).
