Abstract

1339347 Treating tobacco REYNOLDS LEASING CORP 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 20342/71 Heading A2C Tobacco is denicotinized and expanded by impregnating the tobacco in an impregnation zone with an organic liquid solvent for nicotine, the solvent having a boiling point below 100‹C at atmospheric pressure and forming a reservoir of solvent in a lower portion of the said zone and an atmosphere of vapour of the solvent in an upper portion of the said zone, the impregnation being effected by passing nicotine-containing tobacco into contact with said reservoir of solvent and then conveying the solvent-impregnated tobacco into said upper portion of the impregnation zone, withdrawing the solvent-impregnated tobacco from said upper portion and contacting the withdrawn tobacco with a gas heated to a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent at the prevailing pressure to vapourize the solvent and expand the tobacco; separately withdrawing solvent containing nicotine from said reservoir, separating nicotine from the separately withdrawn solvent and contacting the nicotine depleted-solvent with the tobacco in the upper portion of the impregnation zone, the solvent subsequently flowing downwards through the tobacco into the reservoir of solvent. The preferred organic liquid is trichloro monofluoro methane, but many other suitable solvents are specified. The tobacco to be treated is preferably in shredded form with a moisture content between 5 and 200% by weight (dry basis). The impregnation is preferably effected at an elevated pressure and the contacting with hot gas preferably effected at atmospheric pressure. The nicotine may be removed from the organic liquid by any known method, a number of which are specified, removal with dilute acid being exemplified. An apparatus for carrying out the process is illustrated by means of a flow diagram.
