Abstract

1383029 Tobacco extract H F and P H F REEMTSMA 2 June 1972 [9 June 1971] 25837/72 Heading A2C Tobacco aroma substances are obtained by extracting tobacco to isolate only those components of the tobacco which are soluble in a solvent or solvent mixture lying in the mixotropic series of K Macek in Handbuch der Papierchromatographie, vol. I, VEB Gustav Fischer-Verlag, Jena (1958) between trichloroethylene and ethyl acetate inclusive and then, in order to activate precursers of smoke flavour materials, subjecting the residue obtained after removing the solvent(s) from the isolate solution to heat treatment at a temperature between 30‹C and 260‹C inclusive. The residue may be fractionated by differential solvent extraction processes with solvents lying outside the above limits to further isolate the natural aroma substances of tobacco from undesired associated substances.
