1339209 Winding helices DU PONT OF CANADA Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 59346/71 Heading B3E [Also in Division D1] A carding or garnetting drum is made by winding metallic card clothing wires on a smooth drum 10 having an extension 11 in a multistart helical configuration, preventing the wires unwinding, compressing the coils together so as to lie on the drum only, and permanently attaching the wires to the drum. In the Fig, the wire is L- shaped in section, the upright of the L being of sawtooth form. The wire is fed through brake 28 and its leading end is silver-soldered in a groove 25 of a starting shoulder 24. Its other end is soldered into a groove 16 in a finishing shoulder 15 on a collar 14, or clamped to a land 18 on the sleeve. Further wires are then wound on, one or two to each groove, with their sawteeth in axial alignment. The width of a wire multiplied by the number of wires is less than the pitch of winding, and each wire may be wound in contact with its predecessor. When winding is complete, collar 14 is pushed along extension 11 on to drum 10, rotation of the sleeve being prevented by handle 20. Drum 10 may be rotated a little to maintain tension in the wires. Collar 14 is secured to drum 10 by a setscrew in socket 21, and the extension 11 removed. Alternatively, the coils of wire may be clamped to the drum while collar 14 is cut on a lathe to leave shoulder 15 only on the drum, the shoulder then being attached by soldering, riveting, doweling or otherwise, and the clamp removed.
