Abstract

1338712 Internal combustion engine piston NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 12391/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] I.C. engine has a chrome cast iron cylinder liner 2 surrounded by a heat-insulating silicon nitride blanket 3. The piston consists of a body and a number of interlocking silicon nitride segments 4 which rest on a disc 5 of the same material. A lip 6 on the segments engages an annular groove 7 in the body and an expanding spring ring 8 presses the segments against the liner. Silicon nitride scraper rings 9 and 10 are fitted and an extra silicon nitride ring 11 may be provided. The gudgeon pin 12 is hot pressed silicon nitride. Alternatively the entire piston may be formed of silicon nitride.
