Abstract
1338296 Pre-sensitized plates for colour proofing H F GIPE 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970 9 Aug 1971] 38123/71 Heading G2C A pre-sensitized plate for colour proofing comprises a transparent polymeric support, a hydrophilic layer of a water-soluble polyethylene oxide, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylamide or cellulose polymer and a diazo resin present in such amount that on uniform exposure the layer is rendered water-insoluble but remains hydrophilic and a light-sensitive layer of a diazo resin. The support may be treated before application of the hydrophilic layer with (i) a diazo resin and an inorganic acid and uniformly exposing (ii) magnesium oxide or magnesium trisilicate and then a diazo resin and uniformly exposing (iii) a cleaning powder containing a bleach (iv) an abrasive such as sand; all treatments improving the adherence of the hydrophilic layer for the support. In the examples, a polyester support is coated with an anchor layer of a diazo resin and phosphoric acid, uniformly exposed from each side before applying two coatings of a diazo resin and polyethylene oxide or hydroxyethyl cellulose and uniformly exposed. A layer of diazo resin is applied and the material is imagewise exposed to a colour separation negative and developed with an ink emulsion which removes the unexposed areas and adheres to the exposed areas. The process is repeated with other separation negatives and different coloured inks to produce 4 plates which are registered to form the colour proof. Alternatively the plate may be developed before ink is applied in which case the plate is preferably uniformly exposed before application of the ink. The ink used as a developer may be a 2-phase emulsion conprising an aqueous phase of carboxymethyl cellulose and a surfactant and optionally one of the water-soluble polymers specified above and an oleophilic phase optionally containing a silicone polymer.
