Abstract

1482665 Producing printing plates by electron beam exposure HOECHST AG 7 Aug 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 34871/74 Heading G2C A material comprising a metallic support and a layer of hydrophilic light insensitive material is imagewise exposed to an electron beam to harden and render oleophilic the exposed areas and thus produce a lithographic plate specified materials are water-soluble polymers, dyes, carbohydrates and surfactants and water-insoluble polymers and silicic acid, and boehmite, silicate or other layers on Al supports. In the examples, a roughened Al plate with a hydrophilic layer thereon formed (i) by treatment with Na silicate to give a silicate layer or (ii) by coating with polyvinyl pyrolidone, polyvinyl phosphonic acid, casein, tannin or wheat gluton is imagewise exposed to electron beams and used immediately for printing. Alternatively (i) an Al/Cr bi-metallic plate coated with polyvinyl alcohol, dextrin, gum arabic or starch, (ii) an anodized Al plate either coated with polyethylene glycol or treated with hot water to produce a Brehmite layer, or (iii) a roughened Al plate coated with surbitol, cane sugar, glucose, lactose or maltose may be used. In a further example a roughened Al plate is coated with a dye, e.g. Crystal Violet, imagewise exposed and unexposed areas washed off before printing.
