Abstract

1335872 Vulcanizing elastomer compositions MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 13 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1739/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division B5] Compositions comprising an ethylene/α-olefin/ polyene elastomer and a highly unsaturated rubber are vulcanized with at least 2À5 parts by weight of sulphur per 100 parts by weight of elastomers and an aryl guanidine compound as sole accelerator in a ratio of gram atoms of sulphur to moles of guanidine compound of at least 3 : 1, optionally together with zinc oxide, carbon black, stearic acids, fillers, plasticizers and/or stabilizers. The olefin copolymer elastomer may be derived from ethylene, propylene and hexadiene-1,4,2-methylhexadiene-1,5, cyclooctadiene, dicyclooctadiene, dicyclopentadiene, 6-methyl-4,7,8,9-tetrahydroindene or 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene. The highly unsaturated rubber may be natural rubber, polybutadiene, polychloroprene, polyisoprene, styrene/butadiene rubber or acrylonitrile/butadiene rubber. The accelerator may be di-o-tolyl guanidine, o-tolyl diguanidine, diphenyl guanidine or triphenyl guanidine. In examples mixtures of (1 and 2) ethylene/propylene/methyl tetrahydroindene terpolymers with natural rubber; and mixtures of ethylene/propylene/ ethylidene norbornene terpolymers with (3, 4, 7 and 8) natural rubber, (5) styrene/butadiene rubber and (6) acrylonitrile/butadiene rubber: are compounded with carbon black, zinc oxide, stearic acid and phenyl #-naphthylamine and covulcanized with sulphur and di-o-tolyl guanidine or diphenyl guanidine.
