Abstract

1335354 Coating by pack diffusion CHROMALLOY AMERICAN CORP 18 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 54876/70 Heading C7F In a halide pack diffusion process for coating e. g. alloy steels with e. g. Al the heating cycle is such that there is an endothermic arrest at the sublimation temperature of the halide to allow the vapourous halide to clean the substrate surface and to allow outgassing. The halide is a dry anhydrous metal and may be Al chloride, bromide, iodide, Cd iodide or chloride, Co chloride, Ni chloride or iodide, Pb iodide, Bi tri-iodide or chloride, Fe chloride, Ti tetraiodide, TiBr 4 , TiCl 4 , W hexachloride, WCl 4 , WBr 5 , WBr 4 , WI 4 . The pack may also contain an inert material e.g. alumina, thoria, calcia or zirconia.
