Abstract
1335047 Sealing cable joints G W GILLEMOT and J T THOMPSON 19 Oct 1970 49556/70 Heading H2E [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for providing encapsulated connections between the conductors 12, 13 and shields of a shielded cable comprises a flexible walled container 1 which is divided into two segregated sub-compartments 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> by a removable barrier, each sub-compartment holding a respective component 4, 5 of a polymerizable potting compound. The container comprises an impervious tube sealed at its ends 2, 3 and the barrier comprises a cylindrical splined cord and a U-shaped clip 7 with ribs 190. In use the cord 6 and clip 7 are removed, the two components mixed within the container and one end of the container is opened. The jointed conductor ends are enclosed in a flexible open-celled spacer member, which may be a preformed boot 15 or a T-shaped sheet 20 wrapped around the ends. Any insulation covering the shields of the cables is removed adjacent the ends and the exposed shield portions are inserted into the split (44) of a split bolt (42) connector (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) and a nut (43) is screwed down to mechanically and electrically connect the shields. The bolt (42) may have a threaded stud (58) for connection to an earth wire. The jointed conductor ends and the connector are inserted into the mixed potting compound within the container, the open end of which is closed using the cord 6 and clip 7.
