Abstract
1334078 Disposable sanitary napkins K NOGUCHI 5 Nov. 1970 [12 Nov 1969 9 April 1970 12 June 1970] 52670/70 Heading C3F [Also in Division A5] A sanitary napkin is adapted for easy disposal when cast into water in that the absorbent parts are made at least partly from a fibrous mass, the fibres of which shorten and swell on contact with the water to disperse the mass, the mass comprising at least 10% by weight of carboxymethylcellulose (c.m.c.) of length less than 1 cm., of degree of etherification of between 0À15 and 1À5 and average degree of polymerization of greater than 100, from 0-30% of alkaline c.m.c. fibres and from 0 to less than 70% other fibrous material and comprising a solid alkali which may either be a carbonate and an acid or a source having a pH of less than 10 in aqueous solution of 0À1 mol. at room temperature. As shown, the mass 2 is provided on one side with a waterproof layer 3 beneath which is placed a soluble methyl cellulose bag 4 containing NaHCO 3 and citric acid 5, 6. The napkin is completed by a wrapping (7), Fig. 3 (not shown), of paper reinforced with c.m.c., a join (8) being sealed with methyl cellulose (9).
