Abstract

1333731 Spanner and screwdriver ETAB JOINTS 17 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 54704/70 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] A tool (Fig. 11) for tightening a nut 8 and washer 9 on a bolt head 6 to axially compress an expansible insert of filaments 1 (Division F2), has a body 33 with a box spanner 34 journalled in one end and engageable with the nut. A pull rod 39 has a threaded portion 41 and a blind tapped aperture 40, and is axially movable in the body by rotation of nut 42. In use the aperture 40 is applied to the shank of the bolt, then the nut 42 is screwed on to the rod 39, the box spanner engaging the nut 8 and, after drawing the bolt through the bore to compress the insert, engaging the washer 9. Subsequent rotation of the spanner 34 with respect to the body 33 tightens the nut 8 on the bolt 5. Another tool (Fig. 14), for tightening a nut 8d on bolt 5d having a transverse notch in its head 6d for receiving a screwdriver, has a body 43 with a tapped portion 44 and a screwdriver 46 with return spring 47. The body is screwed on to the externally screw-threaded head of the bolt by means of a spanner to contact the washer, the head being held against rotation by the screwdriver, and further rotation of the body draws the bolt and attached nut toward the tool. As the nut is prevented from rotating by the deformed filaments of the insert the bolt is then simply tightened on the nut using the screwdriver.
