Abstract

1332848 Labelling machine VAUTIER FRERES SA 16 Sept 1971 [17 Oct 1970] 43297/71 Heading B8F A labelling machine employs a rotary head 7 having a segment 12 which carries labels by suction from store 9 via gluing roller 23, supplied from reservoir 20, to label articles3, such as cigar boxes, moved by conveyer 4. Compressed air replaces the suction to apply the label and the gluing roller is retracted if no label is received on segment 12. The lateral surfaces of head 7 and a fixed distribution ring 13 are in contact and the alignment of a feed channel to sector 12, opening in the one face, with a groove 15 connected to a vacuum source 17 in the other ensures that sector 12 receives suction over the correct period. A compressed air outlet (not shown) situated either in the downstream end of the groove 15 or just downstream of it communicates with the same feed channel when the label is in position to be applied. Roller 18 engages groove 19 to release a label from store 9 and if no label is received on the sector 12 a vacuostat 28 senses the pressure increase and activates an electromagnet 27 to retract the gluing roller 23. Sector 12 is interchangeable to suit the label size, and the store holding the articles 3 can be modified to accommodate different sizes of articles, and the height of head 7 above the conveyer may be adjustable. The labels may be applied so that one end projects beyond the leading edge of the article for folding round three sides and in this case a pivoted folding member 30 on drum 29 folds part of the projecting end on to the front edge of the article. The remaining part of the label then projects downward through opening 31 and movement of the article causes the edge of the opening to fold it against the underface.
