Abstract

1343495 Transferring designs XEROX CORP 12 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 14449/71 Heading B6C [Also in Division B8] A machine for transferring designs comprises a transfer wheel 17 which applies the labels carrying the designs to articles, and a label accumulator 21 which holds a supply of labels 11, separated from sheet 20 prior to transfer to wheel 17, in order that the supplying means and transfer wheel need not be exactly synchronized. The labels are detached a row at a time from the sheet, previously slit lengthwise by slitters 63, by guillotine 40, and fed to the accumulator on the upper run of endless belt 35, moving around pulleys 38, 39. A stripping finger 34 detaches the labels from pulley 38 and they collect, standing on edge, on the base 27 in the accumulator. A pick off wheel 22 removes the labels through gap 25, between base and rear wall 28, to heated shoe 30 of transfer wheel 17. Vacuum acts through slots in belt 35, pulley 38, wheel 22 and shoe 30 to hold the labels against the moving parts. Articles such as envelopes are fed by a conveyer between the transfer wheel 17 and a pressure roller (not shown). The spacing between the wheel 17 and the pressure roll may be adjustable to accommodate articles of different thicknesses. Once the designs, for instance in the form of wax impressions on the labels, have been transferred to the article, the labels are either collected in a storage tray for possible reuse as glued labels or simply destroyed.
