Abstract
1331899 Adjusting vehicle headlamps SOC ANON DBA 11 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 42138/72 Heading F4R An automatic device for correcting the inclination of the headlamps of a vehicle according to the trim of the vehicle body includes means for deflecting the headlamp beam downwards if the device fails. The device preferably comprises a pneumatic circuit 1, Fig. 2, driving a piston 7 which is connected to the headlamps 8 through a compressed spring 19 and a rod 22, and the means are adapted to release the spring in response to loss of pressure in the circuit. The means include an electrical circuit 11 comprising a first switch 13 closed by variations in the vehicle trim and a second switch 14 closed by loss of pressure in the circuit 1. The spring 19 is compressed between abutment members 20, 21 which may be held together by a fusible link (100, Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) adapted to melt when current flows in the circuit 11. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 7, the abutment members are interconnected by a bimetallic element 200, 202 which normally engages in slots 204 in the member 21 but expands when current flows in the circuit 11 thereby releasing the member 21 and permitting the spring 19 to expand. When the circuit 11 is de-energized the element can be re-engaged with the slots by pushing the abutment members towards one another to re-load the spring.
