Abstract
1330745 Packages E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 11 Aug 1971 [12 Aug 1970 30 March 1971] 37780/71 Heading B8C [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A sealed package containing a measured quantity of a powdered material is made of a plastic film which is readily soluble in cold water (see Divisions B5 and C3). Powdered materials which may be suitably so packaged include pesticides, e.g. the insecticide methomyl, fungicides, herbicides, foodstuffs and foodstuff additives. A package may comprise one or more such packages enclosed in a moistureproof over-wrapping. Such a composite package may contain one package containing the fungicide benomyl and one package containing the fungicide maneb. To minimise the possibility of packages made from the film becoming brittle on storage, the packages may be made and filled in an atmosphere above 35% relative humidity and immediately enclosed in a moisture-proof overwrap. Alternatively, excessive brittleness under low relative humidity conditions may be avoided by including small amounts of highly polar water-soluble substances such as dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol or polyglycols as plasticisers in the film. Packages may be made from the films of the invention on commerically available plastic film package making machinery. In the laboratory bags may be made from the films of the invention by wetting a quarter inch band along three edges of a rectangular piece of the film, followed by placing a second piece of film of the same size as the first piece over the first piece and exerting mild pressure along the wetted edges. The resulting bag with three sealed edges may be filled with a powder and the fourth edge sealed similarly, or by heat-sealing at 120 to 140 C. A moisture-proof overwrap is provided to prevent damage from moisture.
