Abstract

1329260 Making envelopes WINKLER & DUNNEBIER MASCHINENFABRIK UND EISENGIESSEREI KG 13 Oct 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 48618/70 Heading B5D The closure flaps of envelopes or flat bags may be folded to the front or rear of the envelope or folded and re-opened by means of apparatus including three suction cylinders 11, 12, 13 having associated therewith folding and opening devices and elements for controlling the suction applied by the cylinders. The suction cylinders 11, 12, 13 are provided respectively with rows of suction apertures 31, 37, 40 whose suction is timed through arcuate control slats 33, 39, 42 the effective lengths of which are variable by means of known control slides to determine where the envelopes will be delivered. The first suction cylinder 11 comprises a middle part (22) driven in the direction of arrow M and side parts (23) driven by contact with cylinder 13 in the direction of arrows. The closure flaps 4 of envelopes 1 are folded to the rear of the envelopes by the combined action of a folding pocket 9, a folding roller 10 and a suction cylinder 7 of the envelope making machine from which it is transferred to the first suction cylinder 11. If rear-folded closure flaps are required, the envelope is then passed, still folded, via cylinders 12 and 13 and delivery discs 18 to a delivery table 20, as shown. If re-opened envelopes are required the envelope is passed round cylinder 11 by the middle part (22), to a stop abutment 14 where the flap is opened by an air opener 15 and the suction to the cylinder cut off. The envelope is then counter rotated by the side parts (23) of the first cylinder 11 and the third cylinder 13 to discs 18 and table 20. If front-folded flaps are required, after reopening of the flap as above, the envelope is passed via the second cylinder to a folding pocket 16 from which it is lifted past a folding roller 17 by the third cylinder 13. Alternatively, the envelope may be supplied unfolded by the envelope-making machine and the closure flap is folded to the front by passage round cylinders 11 and 12 into the folding pocket 16 from which it is lifted past the folding roller 17 by the cylinder 13.
