Abstract

1,222,153. Bag-forming machines. DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP. 11 March, 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 11733/68. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] In a machine for forming and opening bags made of plastics film, a pair of forming bars 15, 15<SP>1</SP>, mounted on arms 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, rotatable on a shaft 12, are positioned to enter between the layers of a double layer of plastics film 20 fed from a supply roll 21. A sealing and cutting means 22 operates in conjunction with the rotation of the forming bars to cut and seal the plastics film after the passage of the forming bars in the plastics film past the sealing and cutting means. The forming bars, which comprise jaws 16, enter between the layers of plastics film 20 at station A, and then pass through the synchronously opened cutting and sealing jaws 22, carrying a length of plastics film 20 with them. The jaws 22 then clamp shut behind the forming bars, and seal the two layers of film together, completing a bag round the forming bars. At station C the jaws 16 start to open under the influence of a fixed cam on shaft 12 and outwardly distend the bag until the fully open position is reached at station D, when the bag is ready for product insertion. Alternatively the bag may be removed from the forming bars at this juncture. The jaws 16 then close up again ready for the next bag cycle. As shown, the forming bars may be disposed at an obtuse angle to the arms 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, to facilitate entry between the layers of plastics film 20. Alternatively the forming bars may be perpendicular to the arms and a cam-operated picker 18 (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) employed to draw back the edge of one layer of the plastics film to provide an entry point. The arms are driven intermittently by a Geneva drive.
