Abstract
1328516 Cooling plasma torch structures ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 19 Jan 1971 [19 Jan 1970] 2536/70 Heading H5H [Also in Division F4] A plasma torch utilizes a "heat pipe" 11, 17 or 25 between a torch surface to be cooled (e.g. a cathode end 14 or 18 or a nozzle 26) and a cooling device (e.g. cooling water assembly 13 or water jackets 19, 27). The "heat pipe" comprises a sealed evacuated chamber containing liquid sodium or lead as working medium and having capillary means on or between its internal surfaces for returning condensed medium from the cooled upper end to the lower end adjacent the torch surface to be cooled. The capillary means comprise fine grooves along the pipe sides or a mesh, arranged such that surface tension returns the medium to the bottom end of the heat pipe even if the pipe is not vertical. The pipe is formed within the cathode 10, Fig. 1, or has its lower end embedded within the cathode 18, Fig. 2, or is formed around a nozzle 26, Fig. 3, to define the throat. The upper end of the heat pipe chamber may be of increased diameter in the Fig. 1, Fig. 2, embodiments.
