Abstract

1327177 Cutting foodstuffs CELANESE CORP 22 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 29219/72 Heading A4C [Also in Divisions B2 B4 B8 and D1] A method of severing a continuous length of flexible sheet material e.g.: paper, plastics or tobacco substitute, into discrete pieces of a parallelogram configuration comprises feeding the sheet material on a conveyor 12 past cutting discs 14 thereby cutting the material into parallel strips, depositing the material as a sheet with the strip edges contiguous on to a second conveyor 16 while effecting relative movement between the material and the second conveyer so as to form material into a succession of partly overlapping folds on the second conveyor, and continuously cutting the material by discs 20 at a plurality of points across its folded width to sever the strips into parallelograms. As shown the means for effecting relative movement between the cut strips and the second conveyer comprises a porous endless conveyer belt 18 connected to a vacuum source so that the suction acting through the belt causes the sheet of strips to be held on the conveyor surface until it reaches the end of the belt. The belt 18 is adapted to be pivoted oscillated across the conveyer 16 to effect the folds; alternatively the belt 18 could be dispensed with and the belt 16 oscillated relative to the belt 12 or the porous belt may be replaced by a a pair of opposed belts between which the strips are fed or b an oscillatable shoot.
