Abstract
1,044,630. Feeding webs. D. AYRES JONES & CO. Ltd., and D. A. JONES. Sept. 20, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 36382/62. Heading B6B. A web of polythene or other thin limp material is fed by rollers 3, 4, Figs. 1, 7, 8, so that its leading edge passes between knives 33, 34, blowers 46, 48 directing air forwardly and towards the web to keep it in a floating condition. The roller 4 is driven from a cam 25 on a shaft 26 through a rack 17, adjustable at 18 by a hand-wheel 20 for length of feed, a clutch operated by a solenoid 18 being intermittently engaged so that the roller 4 only rotates in forward feed direction. Air is also supplied to a casing 50 whence it passes forwardly into a casing 51, producing suction at the end of the casing 51 which guides the end of the web into said casing, through which it passes in a floating condition due to the air streams therein. When the web has passed between a table 36 and a bar 35 by a predetermined amount, the latter clamps the web to the table. The knife 33 is then moved downwards, co-operating with the stationary knife 32 to sever the web. The roller 4, knives and bar 35 are operated in timed relationship by cams on the shaft 26, and the air blasts are controlled in timed relationship with the above-mentioned mechanisms by a solenoid, which may be the solenoid 18: The table is then lowered so that the web is suspended vertically from the bar 35 and wrapping means then pushes an article, such as a loaf of bread, on to the table so as to be wrapped by the web.
