1327022 Closing wounds NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 2 Sept 1970 [2 June 1969] 27910/69 Heading A5R A tool for applying to the skin, clips 15, which consist of strips of metal with prongs at the ends, provides abutments at two points along the clip equidistant from the centre and a hook 6 to engage the centre of the clip and draw the clip against the abutments to bend in on itself. The clip is located in the recessed end of a cylindrical attachment 1, through which passes a tube 2, which houses a slidable rod 4 attached to the hook. A pivotable trigger 11 actuates the rod and thus the hook by forcing a diametrically enlarged portion 7 of the rod against a spring 9. The clip may be held in position by the hook without bending by the action of a locking sleeve 16, which forces resilient spheres 18 through apertures in the tube against a further enlarged portion of the rod 5b and thus jamming the rod to prevent movement. In order to attach the clip to the skin the trigger 11 is further pulled causing the enlarged portion 5b of the rod to rotate the spheres 18 and thus release the locking sleeve 16 under the action of a spring 21, the clip then being bent into the skin by the hook. The recess 14 in the cylindrical attachment 1 ensures that the clip does not penetrate too far into the skin, whilst a further recess in the attachment 1 houses an electrode in the form of a wire coil which is attached to the skin with the clip, Fig. 2, not shown.
