Abstract

1325622 Upholstery MANUFACTURAS JOSE JOVER S A 19 April 1971 [28 March 1970] 25010/71 Heading A4M [Also in Division B5] A method of moulding an upholstered foamed plastics article e.g. a resilient or rigid motor vehicle seat, door panel, or fascia panel, comprises vacuum forming a two-way stretchable sheet 8 having a decorative finish, e.g. a knitted backing fabric covered by a layer of thermoplastic material, in a mould 2 having holes 4 and a vacuum chamber 5, and maintaining the vacuum whilst an expandable material e.g. polyurethane, is introduced into the mould, the vacuum being released when the expandable material reaches a stage of dimensional stability. the sheet 8 being clamped in position by a frame 11 maintained in position by gravity or springs 12 so that the sheet can move where necessary and vacuum is applied through a connection 10. The mould is closed by a cover 6. The moulding is carried out at ambient temperature with a cold mouldable foam to prevent damage to the sheet 9. After stripping edge portions of the sheet 8 are folded back over the article, Fig. 3 (not shown), and secured in position by clips or adhesive, if necessary to a rigid moulded insert. The sheet 9 is treated for adherence to the foam either by roughing the internal surface or treating it with an adhesive, e.g. a polyamide resin.
