Abstract

1324724 Making flexible waveguides INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 10 May 1971 [8 May 1970] 14079/71 Heading H1W A flexible waveguide is made by continuously extruding a sheath of synthetic polymeric material over a continuously wound helix or helices of insulated conductive material. As shown, insulated conductive wire or strip is wound from bobbins (not shown) within a rotating winding head 10 on to a fixed mandrel 9. The resultant helix or helices pass between pairs of feeding belts 19 to an extrusion head 14 where a sheath of polymeric material is applied. The sheath is cooled in a bath 15 of liquid which encloses pairs 16 of moving endless elastic belts for regulating axial forces within the helix. The mandrel 9 extends through these adjusting devices. The apparatus may also comprise a rotating head 13 for lapping the helix with dielectric or conductive tape and a winding drum 18. The waveguides are described and claimed in Specification 1,324,723.
