Abstract
1364856 Cables WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 31 Aug 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 40627/71 Heading H1A [Also in Division B3] In a method of manufacturing a waterproofed cable a core assembly 12 is passed through a forming tube 28, into which heated jelly-like waterproofing material 18 is introduced under pressure at a point between the ends of the tube, and a corrugated sheath 19 of aluminium tape 19T is applied to the core as it leaves the tube. The assembly 12 comprises a plurality of coaxial conductors wrapped in tape 16 and a helical ribbon (17, Fig. 5, not shown) and it is passed through tube 28 at such a rate that the material 18 does not flow out of the inlet end of the tube. Also because of the pressure of the waterproofing material the assembly moves concentrically relative to the tube 28. Sheath forming apparatus 26 comprises continuous belts 46 which travel over sheaves (51, Fig. 2, not shown) mounted on adjustable rod assemblies (52) located at each forming station 44. After leaving the tube 28 the sheathed core is bound by a helical ribbon (22), flooded in further waterproofing material 23 and has a plastics jacket 24 extruded around it. In the embodiment described the waterproofing material 18 comprises 85% petroleum jelly and 15% polyethylene applied to the core at 250 F. and 50 p.s.i.
