Abstract

1324364 Processing fabrics COURTAULDS Ltd 30 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 53469/69 Heading D1P A process for treating fabric consisting of, or containing in addition to other filaments or yarns, crimped continuous filaments of cellulose triacetate, comprises impregnating the fabric with a solution of (a) urea and phenol, (to) N-N'-di-2-cyanoethylformamide, or (c) diethylene-glycol diacetate; drying the fabric; heat setting the fabric whilst it is held to width; and saponifying the surface of the triacetate filaments of the set fabric to produce treated fabric. The fabric treated in this way, may be dyed on a winch dyeing machine at 80 to 85‹C. When the fabric is impregnated with a solution of urea and phenol, it is preferred that the fabric is heat set at 140 to 170‹C. and that the solution contains 4 parts by weight of urea to 1 part by weight of phenol and that the urea/phenol pick up should be between 18.5 and 25% of the dry fabric weight. When the fabric is impregnated with a solution, of N,N'-di-2-cyanoethylformamide or of diethyleneglycol diacetate, it is preferred that the fabric is heat set at from 160‹ to 190‹C. In this process the alkaline solution employed in regenerating cellulose at the surface of the triacetate filaments need not be so strong as the solution employed in the conventional process. The alkaline solution may be a caustic alkali or a mixture of an alkali and a quaternary ammonium compound. Preferably the temperature of the solution should be from 50 to 70‹C.
