Abstract

1323834 Spinneret for composite filaments MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 16 July 1971 [20 July 1970 1 Sept 1970] 33488/71 Heading B5B A spinneret for spinning composite filaments comprises a spinneret plate 2 having opposite upstream and downstream sides and feed passages 3 and 4 for separately introducing different polymer compositions A and B and an extrusion passage 5 which communicates with said feed passages, said feed passages extending for part of the thickness of the plate from the upstream side thereof towards the downstream side thereof, the passages satisfying the following inequality, L 0 < L 1 # 5À7#S wherein S equals the cross-sectional area (mm<SP>2</SP>) of the extrusion passage, L 1 equals the length (mm) of the extrusion passage and L 0 (mm) is the distance of the downstream end of the feed channel inside the plate from the downstream side of the plate. As shown, 1 is a separating plate for separating the two components A and B. The crosssectional shape of the extrusion passage 5 may be circular or non-circular, especially Y-shaped or cruciform. In a modification, shown in Fig. 7, a distribution plate 12 is fitted, having guideholes 9 and 10 which communicate respectively with the feed channels 3 and 4, and which have different ratios of length to diameter (L/D) with respect to one another. This is especially suitable for the spinning of a composite fibres from components which differ markedly in melt viscosity. Uniform distribution of such components to the extrusion passage can be attained by making L/D of guide hole 10 in distribution plate 12 for the component B of lower viscosity greater than L/D of guide hole 9 for the component A of higher viscosity. A further modification is shown in Fig. 8, where a distribution plate 12 is used in which the guide holes 9 and 10 are inclinedly formed. This enables the width of the separating plate 1 to be made greater so that the separation of each component can be more advantageously effected. Filaments spun may be of circular or non-circular cross-section, especially cruciform, trilobal and annular.
