A spinneret plate 1 (Fig. 1, not shown), for the production of composite artificial filaments of the sheath-core type by the simultaneous extrusion through a common spinneret orifice into a solidifying zone of two different spinning liquids comprises a supply chamber 2a therein for the spinning solution from which the sheath component of the filament is to be formed and a number of bores 3 (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) arranged in a circle near the periphery of the plate. In these bores are located cylindrical inserts or mandrels 5 which are axially bored at 6 to allow the passage of a spinning liquid which is to form the core part of the filaments from a supply source (not shown) to the outlets 7 of the bores 6. The lower end of each insert 5 is of smaller diameter than the lower end of each bore 3 in which it is located, the clearance between them forming a passageway 8 of annular cross-section communicating through a duct 4a with the supply chamber 2a for the spinning liquid which is to form the sheath part of the filament. This spinning liquid is extruded through the passageway 8 in the form of a tubular stream which surrounds and contacts the stream of core-forming liquid which is extruded through the outlet 7 of the bore 6. The tubular stream which subsequently forms the sheath is formed in the passageway 8 insid the spinneret before it is discharged simultaneously with the core stream from the extrusion orifice of the spinneret.
